Your child’s education is important to you; however, your family travels quite a bit for uncontrollable reasons. You don’t like to get them started in a traditional high school, just so they can get comfortable, make new friends, then half to take them out and move again. You’re probably thinking that this isn’t fair to your child; but what other ways are there for you to make sure that your child receives a quality education? Distance Learning is the answer.

With the capable abilities of today’s technology, education has become so advanced that different avenues are now available for today’s student. No longer is one required to physically attend a school. With the internet and a computer, all things are possible. How about attending an online high school? You could move to the North Pole or even the South Pole, as long as there is internet access, your child will attend the exact same school until they graduate as a high school Senior.

The curriculum for an online high school is based upon the same foundation as that of a traditional high school. Your child will still study and learn the normal high school classes such as: math, science, reading, writing and so on. Based upon your child’s abilities they could even be placed in advanced courses. If you choose to send your child to an accredited online high school, you will ensure that your child’s education is one that will be recognized in the future by his/her prospective colleges and employers.

All different kinds of students are now taking advantage of the online learning environment. Creative students who are pursuing careers as dancers or actors, junior athletes who are competing at exceptional levels to students who have learning difficulties in a traditional high school setting are now students who take advantage of this new found educational freedom. Parents from all over the world are offering this opportunity to their children.

An online high school allows for flexibility in a student’s education. Meaning if your child has an interest that they would like to pursue, they will still be able to do that and get a quality education. Your child can choose to attend and work on their studies during the day or they choose to work on them at night. With an online high school, your child’s education is available to them twenty-four hours per day, 7 days a week. They will be able to work at their level as well. For instance, if they are a freshman and is capable of doing the work of a sophomore, they will be able to do it, without hesitation from the school. Doesn’t that sound great?

Yes, your child will still be able to attend graduation, walk down the aisle, and throw that hat! And as a parent, you will still be able to sit there and take all the pictures you want. Even though they may attend an online school, physical prom activities as well as physical graduation ceremonies are offered.

So, worry no more. If you are a traveling family and your child doesn’t get to “settle” in a school for too long, the distance learning option is right for you.

It has already been cited by leaders in the field, such as Simon Baron-Cohen of The Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University and Rosalind Picard at The MIT Media Lab.

The Persuasive Adaptive Interactive Xperience (Paix) is a seductive hypermedia community information system that aims to promote peaceful lives in 21st century communities.

Using the latest psychological theories from The Centre for Research into Online Communities and E-Learning Systems, Paix aims to help people overcome their barriers they have to success through understanding them as an individual with membership of many groups (e.g. communities) as opposed to a lone individual in a single networked society (c.f. networked individualism).

A version of Paix, dedicated to the Community of Pontypridd is currently being developed. One feature will be a memorial to the peaceful efforts of those who worked as part of the war effort during the Second World War in the food and munitions factories, farms and mines for instance. This part of the project was first envisaged in December 2010 as reported in the Pontypridd & Llantrisant Observer.

MEDIAT stands for; ‘The Mediated Emotion Demonstration Intervention using Avatars and TAGTeach’.

It is an intervention for people who have difficulty dealing with emotions and social situations, such as autism, social phobia, and anxiety conditions among others.
A demonstration on MEDIAT was made at the British Psychological Society’s Wellbeing Conference at Glyndwr University in September 2011.

Try it out for yourself
Do you have problems in social situations or understanding your or others’ emotions. MEDIAT could help you. DCOT are trying to build an evidence base to make MEDIAT available for personal use. If you are located in South Wales and have a social/emotional condition please get in touch – MEDIAT could change your life. Please complete the confidential form below or email the co-ordinator, Jonathan Bishop, on jonathan.bishop@crocels.com.
